F-Zero X Advanced Techniques:
A guide by Harry.Spin Attacking:
A spin attack is an advanced move for knocking opponents off course, or depleting their energy. It is the only technique in this list which is used by the CPU.To perform a spin attack you need to hold one of the 'drift buttons' (R or Z) and then double tap the other. The direction of the spin depends on which way round you press the buttons.
Sliding and Boostsliding:
Sliding in F-Zero X serves as one of the most basic techniques, but also one of the most effective. It involves 'sliding' round the corners to increase speed.First, make sure you are using a vehicle with low grip and high boost. This will allow you to easily get around tight corners at high speeds. The vehicles who best suit this technique are the Blood Hawk or the Night Thunder. When you get to the customisation screen choose 'slider' settings: set your acceleration to maximum.
When you are racing you will now have less speed on straight sections but more speed on turns. Clearly, you will not want to be using this on a track like Silence, but only on tracks like Mute City 3.
When going into a corner, instead of drifting inwards by tapping Z or R, tap the opposite button. For example, if you are going into a left hand turn you should tap R while turning left. Try to maintain a smooth curve to avoid losing speed - practise on simple tracks like Mute City 1 in Time Trial mode.
When you exit the slide, simple move the analogue stick to counter the turn. Try and straighten up as quickly as possible to be ready for the next obstacle.
If you are on the second or third lap then you will be able to perform a Boostslide. Simply press B mid-slide to increase the speed even further. Using this technique you will be able to easily achieve over 1000km/h (PAL) in one slide. See the video below for a short example of sliding.
Grinding or Railsliding:
Grinding (AKA Railsliding) is a way of sliding on a straight. It will increase speed but also cause damage so it has to be used more carefully than a standard slide. You will want to use the same vehicles for this as with sliding: Blood Hawk and Night Thunder. Also, make sure you set your acceleration to max.
Turn and tap the opposite drift to initiate the slide, then make contact with the wall and try to stay there for as long as you can.
To exit the slide, turn sharply away from the wall and then straighten up before the next obstacle.
You can also add a boost to create a Grindboost or Railboostslide, but I would not advise this as your energy will dissapear VERY quickly. See the video below for an example of this technique.
Double Tapping or DTing:
DTing is a basic side attack which can be used to maintain high speeds around corners. It should be used over sliding when: sliding is not possible, when travelling at very high speeds (and sliding will slow you down) or in very fast chicanes, such as in Port Town 1.
To perform a DT you simply need to tap R or Z twice. There is nothing to it other than that. The video below is an example, you may want to watch it a few times to see exactly what happens.
Double Tap Dive or DTD:
A double tap dive is an advanced techniques used to obtain rediculously high speeds very quickly. To perform this technique you need to be using slider settings and be in a car with low grip and high boost, such as the Blood Hawk or Night Thunder.
Start by grinding/railsliding (or boost railsliding) off a jump. As you start to fall get ready to double tap R or Z to get back to the track. Doing this during a dive will increase you speed dramatically.
Keep double tapping until you hit the floor. After this, you will probably want to continue tapping a direction which will stop you hitting a wall.
Air Control Into Double Tap Dive or ACIDTD:
The difference between this and a standard DTD is that at the start of the dive you move the vehicle to gain maximum height before tapping. This is very useful in areas where you could not normally perform a DTD.As you take-off, pull the analogue stick towards you, and then roll 270 degrees in either direction until you are in a standard DTD position. Finally, begin double tapping R or Z to move in the correct direction. The video below is a fantastic example of this technique
